Relationships with manager(s)

My managers typically have been available. I don't really have issues that require me to reach out to them specifically, but during the few times I brought concerns, they've been open and helpful.
July 1, 2020

Application and interview process

During the application and interview process, I felt comfortable, based on my past experiences with and preparation for interviewing at HCCG, Goldman Sachs, and Harvard College, I knew what I needed to do.
July 1, 2020

Application and interview process

The recruiting team got back to me with updates pretty timely, and my application process was much more simple than others' application processes. I applied through the Deloitte internship. A lot of applicants have to go through many phone calls, “Super Days”, etc. but I didn't have to go through any of that. I wasn't sure why, maybe my experience or how I applied had something to do with it.
July 1, 2020

Company culture

I think consulting is very team oriented, so my experience is shaped by this dynamic. I've often been the only black person on the team, but I never felt estranged by this. Actually, I also have been on data science teams that were almost all black.
July 1, 2020

Application and interview process

I thought the recruiting process was annoying. I first spoke with a recruiter in Oct, and I didn't get a response until Jan, but apparently that was just a fluke.

Training and career development

At least once a month, you'd have a check in with your supervisor. I really liked that aspect of it where we had informal feedback sessions throughout the year, rather than just your year end review.
August 19, 2020

Company culture

The experience is very team-dependent. The team that I worked with was great and I really loved everyone. I felt like everyone was invested in me and in my career.
August 19, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

They were really good. They were invested, and even now that I've moved on from the firm, they still try to keep in contact.
August 19, 2020

Company culture

I did feel separated from the other teams just because we didn't interact with them very much.
August 19, 2020

Diversity programs

They really put the onus on you to be involved in the diversity programs. I would've liked to see more outreach from the actual programs. Especially when working at a client site, it was difficult to go to the Womens or Hispanic Network events.

August 18, 2020

Company culture

Everyone is very inclusive and accepting of each other. It's much different from PwC. PwC was like you had to be in a frat or be ‘cool.' Deloitte is kind of like that, but it's easier to find better people here.
August 18, 2020

Training and career development

It's really good. On Friday's you can always catch a class on M&A or Agile. There's always classes on your schedule that you can attend. I got my certification i M&A, and that's like a $1000 certification. You don't have to pay for it because they want you to be the best you can.
August 18, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

I have had one bad manager. We had four people on the team, and one of them was Indian, and it seemed like the manager always helped the Indian guy. He liked me and we were cordial, but you could never get to that next level with him.
August 18, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

I've had four managers so far. My first manager was really cool, and we related on a religious level. When I messed up, he would never put it on the review. Instead, he'd take me into a room and just tell me what I needed to work on.
August 18, 2020

Salary and benefits

Deloitte gives you the bag. I feel like the company pays really really well. PwC didnt pay very well. I think Deloitte is the highest paying of the big four right now.

October 2, 2020

Company culture

The culture is definitely about work, The company cares about results, and it isn't as touchy-feely as it was as EY.
October 2, 2020

Diversity programs

I got pulled into diversity recruiting back in August, and it's super robust. Deloitte does things from a national level, so they have me going to conferences and things like that.
October 2, 2020

Salary and benefits

I'm getting compensated very well. I got a 30% jump when I left EY to come to Deloitte.
October 2, 2020

Application and interview process

The application process was cool, but the interview process was super crazy. My flight got delayed, and I was a few hours late for my interview. I had 3 behavioral interviews and 1 case interview. The case was really hard, and the manager made sure that I didn't use any consulting jargon.
October 2, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

My first relationship with my manager was tough because I was used to the vibes at EY. She gave me tough love. I felt super average when I first came in, but my manager has built a super close relationship with me. She texted me on Mother's Day to check in on me because she knew that is a difficult day for me.

July 7, 2020

Company culture

There is a big team effort at Bank of America. We're all working together buying and selling bonds from a large pool that's being covered by people on the same team. If my teammate is selling bonds, for example, I'm likely the one trying to see which of my clients are perfect to buy her bonds. We're close, we work long hours together, and try to help each other out. It's a very close trading floor. The environment is competitive, but healthy.
July 7, 2020

Company culture

There is also a good work/life balance, especially early on. My average hours are from 6:30am to around 6:00pm which isn't bad at all in this field. I'm also a morning person so these hours are particularly ideal for me. And the hours definitely improve/grow more relaxed the longer I'm here.
July 7, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

There is a focus and level of support within management specifically on recruiting diverse candidates. My boss is someone who's been surrounded by black culture in his life, especially having played professional sports. He's been nothing but supportive of bringing in people from all walks of life.
July 7, 2020

Application and interview process

The promotion process, as far as I can tell, is fair. You can get promoted to associate if you do a good job by your second year! Early promotions are appearing to be continuously in my favor. There have, however, been some miscommunications with others. Others have reported that the promotion may not have been as straightforward, although I can't necessarily fully speak to their experience.
July 7, 2020

Company culture

Bank of America is really fun! At the end of the day, when you're interviewing for firms, they have very similar credits, systems, and structures. But the deciding factor for me was the people. I definitely connected with the Bank of America staff the most. Plus it was helpful already knowing people who worked there.

August 11, 2020

Diversity programs

Whenever I run into another Latina with a background like mine, it is very rare. I think I've met 8 in my experience here. It's a relief when I find another Latina; the firm has made it extremely difficult to form a community.
August 11, 2020

Promotion discussions

Unconscious bias is rampant- and often URM leaders don't have the capacity to support other URM practitioners because they themselves think they have limited “political capital” to expend. I just don't recommend going through this, it's unnecessary stress.
August 11, 2020

Accessibility

They make provisions for people with disabilities. There are a lot of customizations, it'll depend on the employee speaking up for them to make personalized accommodations, but they will do it.
August 11, 2020

Promotion discussions

I hate the promotion process at Deloitte. It's really subjective. Once a year, there are partners who get together to discuss your performance for a few minutes; and that determines your promotion, compensation and other career opportunities. If you know the partners, you're in good shape. That's the biggest problem - it really just depends on your social capital and that tends to work against URMs who often join the firm with limited social capital. Not to mention, leaders tend to mentor and choose people who look like them! Leadership is seriously predominantly white. Only 3% of the partners at the firm identify as URM.
August 11, 2020

Diversity programs

The Hispanic network is run by white women who are not allies, and when I expressed that I wanted to be part of leadership, I was given a really hard time. When I challenged leadership to question why there weren't Latinos on the Hispanic board, I was removed from the group mailing list and received no response as to how I could get involved. If there are Hispanics/Latinx employees who want to be part of the group's leadership and are shut down by the same white women themselves who run the group, this screams white fragility, white control, and white supremacy. It's so problematic. The Hispanic network, by the way, has very limited programming.

September 14, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

I've personally reached out to people of color. For instance, my coach at Deloitte is a Black woman. On my second project, my Senior Manager was a Black woman. I've actively looked for people that look like me on the projects I've been on because I know representation matters.
September 14, 2020

Company culture

The firm is trying to do the good thing all the time. Right now in the summer of Black Lives Matter, they were trying to get people to buy books and read articles. I don't think they're past lip service at this point.
September 14, 2020

Salary and benefits

The benefits are amazing! However, I do not feel fairly compensated for my work. The pay scale within Deloitte varies immensely based on your offering portfolio even though you may be doing the same work as someone else. As far as the industry goes, I believe we are a bit underpaid there as well.
September 14, 2020

Diversity programs

I've struggled because I've been the only Black person recruited from my school. GPS recruiting from my school is a small group year over year, and it's mostly been white women who get offers
September 14, 2020

Accessibility

When the protests started, I was on an internal rotation, and the team was really good about supporting me. They opened it up for communication and allowed me to take PTO when I needed to. The project that I'm currently on, there have been additional things going on since August, but I haven't heard anything from project leadership. Things can be really hit or miss depending on who your leadership is. You can be on a small team like I am right now, and they'll just tell you to keep working.

August 23, 2020

Company culture

Work-life balance - a lot of projects are capped at 40 hours. You are highly encouraged to participate in firm initiatives and they allow you to explore work that is part of your passion. Although it's extra work, it's usually where practitioners find purpose and it makes me feel like I'm here at work for a reason.
August 23, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

Managers are usually very responsive and available as long as you set expectations. They are understanding and open to you setting boundaries. They're respectful of my time, personal obligations, and personal aspirations.
August 23, 2020

Application and interview process

It was a little different because I was originally pre-med, but figured out I didn't want to be a doctor so I applied a month before the application deadline. I was really stressed about the process because everyone else had a more traditional background and was knowledgeable about the industry. I didn't realize how much networking was a part of consulting - the person interviewing me was actually someone I had met on campus.
August 23, 2020

Training and career development

If you tell your manager that you need days off to take a training, there's usually no issues. It's a part of our culture to develop your professional goals.

I want to see someone who looks like me as the CEO. Last year, we had our first ever female CEO (yay, but also what?! Deloitte is over 100 years old). She's White, and while that's a stride for women, that didn't make me feel any more empowered than I did when a White man is made the CEO

Training and career development

The Company is great at ensuring that your career goals and development, whether it's within the Company or not, is trending towards what you want. A way they do this is by having quarterly coaching with you, check-ins, sponsoring you to conferences that you're passionate about or that are diversity related. They do a good job with advising you to own your career but at the end of the day it's up to you to voice it. You may not get those opportunities immediately but you're likely to if you're performing well at your job and showing that you're constantly growing and developing.
October 12, 2019

Diversity programs

Regardless of all the more positives I give the Company, I believe the Company can do more at retention. They do a lot with bringing in talents that are like me through incredible programs to identify talents, as young as College Freshman, and give them internships opportunities. However, for those that are currently working and those that end up getting full-time, the retention isn't the best. I think they can improve on being intentional with retaining talents that look like me.

Training and career development

Be upfront about the opportunities available (specifically, only operations and implementation work was available as opposed to the strategy work peddled) Help people get staffed - the "staff yourself" model is highly discriminatory and excludes people of color as the company has limited diversity. As a result most teams were cliques that excluded people of color. Any feedback to HR received a response of "its your duty to staff yourself and if it's not happening then something is wrong with you". This is after hours of doing grunt work of proposals and pitches and when work was won other "less diverse" teammates that were parts of these cliques were chosen, even in situations where I had more experience than the chosen teammate. Needless to say, after I left Deloitte i found other ex-teammates that went through similar situations that described the firm as highly racist and discriminatory. Shame on the firm!

They could be better at showcasing how people pursue their passions, and teach people ways in which they could do that. There should also be more willingness from leadership to provide more transparency into how they are actually making progress on this.
