End-to-end

I noticed that a lot of Black women got rolled off of projects early and at a certain point that just appears to be a trend. I wouldn't recommend IBM for any Black person.

Diversity programs

They didn't have any. I don't remember any robust programming or a strong presence, especially compared to my current employer or previous internships. There was a lot more emphasis on women, but that's not always the best avenue for women of different intersectional identities. There wasn't a strong diversity group or coalition at IBM outside of what they had for women.

End-to-end

At the beginning, I was definitely optimistic and excited. I was ready to learn. I joined consulting because I wanted to learn about different industries. Upon exiting, I was disappointed, but also grateful because I was able to get some learnings out of the experience. I had not worked on product management before I worked at IBM, and I don't think i would have been able to work in my current role at Mastercard before I was at IBM.

Relationships with manager(s)

When I was putting in my two-weeks notice, my primary manager was unreachable. It was only when I reached out to tell her that I was leaving that she showed interest. I didn't think the managers at IBM were good or that they were very well-trained. I don't think there's any diversity or sensitivity training, which should be required if you're managing different types of people.

Relationships with manager(s)

My primary manager wasn't super helpful in getting me on a project when I first started. That says something about IBM because they didn't have a lot of projects and they over-hired associate consultants the year I joined so work was scarce. My manager wasn't the most helpful in introducing me to people to get an engagement to work on. My relationship with her wasn't particularly strong.

Company culture

While IBM is a huge company, I've generally gotten the vibe that they are more "liberal" and "progressive" than some other places. I think it's important to keep in mind that the tech industry in general is more liberal than, for example, the banking industry. If you compare IBM only to other tech companies...I think they may fall on the more conservative side (most likely due to their age). In my particular office (for consultants) in Houston, it is smaller so my voice is generally heard. I definitely feel like I can make a difference in the office culture-- which is very important to me and my favorite aspect of IBM.

Diversity programs

I can only provide information about my specific location, but I believe there is a great level of diversity at the low level (where I am). However, once you start to climb up the leadership ladder, it is drastically different. There are hardly any women or people of color (with the exception of people of Indian descent). Of course this problem isn't specific to IBM...but they certainly aren't trailblazers in this area either.

Relationships with manager(s)

I like my managers a lot. One manager works with me on my personal development at the company, and she is committed to helping me find the best projects. The other manager I work with on my actual project has been incredible-- she trusts each of us to do our jobs and has been very patient with our team. Additionally, when I asked for time off to attend a black BRG event, she gave me the okay and was supportive.

Company culture

IBM has so many different types of people and groups that it is so easy to find coworkers who are in similar stages of life or in the career that you aspire to be in. Everyone is helpful and willing to mentor anyone at any level.

Company culture

It's hard to navigate a big company like this. Especially with all of the work flexibility...most people work from home, so it can feel a little alone at times.

Relationships with manager(s)

My manager and I have a great relationship. She is always interested in hearing my input and I have been able to make great contributions to the team in the short amount of time I've been there.

Company culture

Provides resources (and opportunities) for me to feel heard, respected and appreciated.

Company culture

Internally and externally the enablement information can sometimes be very repetitive and wordy. We can improve by creating a high level synopsis of the "what, why and how." A few bullet points or visuals in regards to what's important to know and what's the latest regarding the company. I believe if the information is more digestible more people (especially externally) would have a better understanding of who we are as a company.

Training and career development

The training is great. A lot of resources to grab information so we can position ourselves as thought leaders in front of client. In general, the people are cordial. Some are more inviting than others. The company is greatly remote, meaning you can work from anywhere.

Diversity programs

IBM does not recruit Black and Brown populations well. We don't partner with organizations or schools to push diversity and inclusion forward. There is more of a discussion around women than there is about black and brown, and it shoes in our senior leadership. We have more white women in position than black women.

Application and interview process

I submitted my application online, and I had to do an online interview, and I didn't hear back for a couple months which was frustrating. I expected the process to be quicker, but there was a 3 month gap between the computer screening and someone actually contacting me.

Promotion discussions

I've had a different track than a lot of people. I've gotten two promotions in two years. I've been up front with my manager about what motivates me, which is money. As soon as I get on a team, i have a conversation about how I can go from Band X to Band Z (band is what determines your salary). The process has been good to me, but I don't know if that's the norm.

Company culture

"I love the flexibility of things. I can work from home all the time. I was doing 50% travelling. I really like the work that I do and that it gives me time to enjoy life as well. When you think of IBM, you think of buttoned up, old white men, but I went through the Summit program, and in that program there was a good amount of diversity. Since I've been at the firm longer and progressed a bit, representation has gone down. I work with fewer people that look like me than I used to."
June 22, 2020

Diversity programs

"IBM has been really good about recruiting from HBCU's. I've met the HBCU recruiter, and he went to an HBCU himself, so he's really passionate about getting Black talent. IBM always touts it's diversity and inclusion efforts, so you can see that they want to incorporate it in their culture. I'm the lead for my office's Black summit network. That's been fun just in terms of building a friend group at work, and we've done volunteer efforts and things like that. We also are working on mentorship and career development programs for people in the group."

Relationships with manager(s)

All of my managers have been really good. I prefer to have autonomy in my work; I don't like managers that are on top of you in your day to day. All my managers have been pretty open, and we have regular touchpoints where we just get to catch up personally, and then talk about the work that I've been doing, and then what they can do to help me progress.
