Relationships with manager(s)

I personally had phenomenal mentorship and relationships with my managers. Given the projects I worked on had little influence in my annual review, their influence was limited. Overall though, they believed in me and trusted me with responsibility above my level.
November 12, 2019

Training and career development

Given the scale of the company on a global basis, they have structures and programs in place to train, educate, and develop talent. I had the opportunity to visit many global offices of the firm (London, Frankfurt, Brussels, Bangalore, etc.) and found a consistent level of quality in the work and people.
November 12, 2019

Training and career development

Since it's such a big company, they struggle to give personalized attention to junior staff. Additionally, they are very prescriptive about how they want you to work, so if you don't follow in that thinking your likelihood for promotion and advancement is limited.

Relationships with manager(s)

My relationships vary with different managers, but I largely feel supported in my efforts, regardless if they ultimately benefit me or the firm.

Diversity programs

PwC has been very vocal about social issues over the past couple years. Especially with the recent shooting of Botham Jean, I have seen PwC continue to speak and represent the issue as it should have been, although with limited publicity from my perspective. Within the firm, however, the dominating presence of white, male partners does not necessarily align with the diverse picture they are trying to paint. More and more Indian-Americans like myself are rising the ranks, as seen in other large companies, but I do not hear as much for under-represented minorities.

Diversity programs

While I have had the opportunity to work with open and diverse senior leaders, much of the financial services-specific culture still resonates within my FS advisory role. As the firm begins to focus more on technology, I would like to see more diverse leaders who are experts in the space taking the lead instead of the same partners giving generic pitches to employees.

Relationships with manager(s)

My managers were very supportive. I met with them regularly to discuss feedback and what areas I would like to learn more about. Some of my managers held lunchtime yoga sessions and informal life coaching; I really enjoyed and appreciated these events. It is all about taking initiative and putting yourself out there.
July 7, 2020

Company culture

I would say the culture depends on the project. Overall, there is a strong culture of mentorship. You are assigned different mentors which will help you with different stages of your career. You will receive advice from a lot of different places and partake in informal networking. The team atmosphere was definitely there. I've attended a diversity event for women in coding, an LGBTQ event, and more. These events are a great resource to have at such a large firm; they give you opportunities. I feel like I can be myself at PwC, but adjusting to corporate life can be hard for anyone as it is a very different environment.

Application and interview process

I found the PwC to be very punctual during the application process. PwC's process was very streamlined. I felt welcomed and included during the interviews, and people were genuine and friendly.
July 7, 2020

Training and career development

There is a very formalized process for career development and mentorship. When you first arrive at the company you are assigned three mentors. They are responsible for guiding you as well as observing your performance.

Company culture

Work life balance is pretty much not attainable, they preach a great balance, but it isn't always there. I oftentimes work until midnight. Firm does good job at having diversity and group inclusive efforts. Everyone is pretty smart and helpful.
July 5, 2020

Diversity programs

First great thing they do is they offer specific internships for minorities from all income brackets to get their foot in the door early in the firm. This usually happens 2-3 summers before they graduate. First year black associates go to Orlando for a weeklong conference of about 3,000 people. It's a huge networking event and opportunity to meet other black colleagues. Great to see other people that look like me and face the same problems in a predominantly white firm.
July 5, 2020

Accessibility

There probably are some programs for people with disabilities, just not sure about it. It hasn't been advertised that much. I haven't seen anyone with a noticeable disability.
July 5, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

I work pretty closely to everyone from all levels. Managers are busy every day and on the phone all the time. People in manager positions are usually relatively young, so it's easy to build a close relationship with managers since they're close to you in age. I interact with senior manager and director pretty frequently, but not always the case for everyone.
July 5, 2020

End-to-end

Did not like the first team I was placed in. I expressed concerns with coach and allowed him to pivot easily from one service to another. If you have an interest in a different role, it's easy to do it, you just have to speak up and ask for it.

Diversity programs

They had START, which is an HR internship that gets you acclimated to the company culture. The program was helpful because everyone in the program is Black or Latino, so you're connecting with these people and the program acts as a pipeline to get people into the company.
August 18, 2020

Company culture

They bring you through a pipeline where you go from HR to client-facing. It was a good culture because they put you around people that look like you. They kind of trick you because you didn't know that your client work would be with people that don't look like you.
August 18, 2020

Company culture

It wasn't lax. It was semi cutthroat and rigid. It depended on your client team.
August 18, 2020

Promotion discussions

They have a board that acts as a buffer for end of year discussions and makes sure that there's no discrimination. They told that to all of the Black people.
August 18, 2020

End-to-end

On my fourth client, I took a new role with an all white team, and they seemed like they wanted to help out and teach you things, but they would make little racial comments like “oh, you know he's from Brooklyn.” Or I would say “I got you” and they would mock me and say “I got you, I got you.”

July 5, 2020

Company culture

People won't help you unless you ask for help. If you don't make the effort to put yourself out there, you'll find yourself in a place where you have trouble finding help when you need it.
July 5, 2020

Company culture

January-March is the busiest time of the year for most auditors, but the remainder of the year is the typical 40-50 hour work week.
July 5, 2020

Diversity programs

When I first got there, I thought the diversity initiative was like checking off a box. But now, I've changed my mind a bit. We do a good job of having minority resource groups, and even how they've handled the social injustices we're seeing. They're not sugar-coating the issues and want to have genuine conversations. I'm pleasantly surprised at our responses. I'll be curious to see if it continues though.
July 5, 2020

Company culture

I feel like sometimes people are afraid to give me criticism. I'd rather have a direct conversation, but I think a lot of times people are more passive aggressive. And ultimately, that just takes me longer to learn and adjust.
July 5, 2020

Company culture

Depending on your environment, you'll quickly realize you will be the only black person on the majority of your teams. The people on your teams may not be representative of the people you're accustomed to. Relationships are really important at PwC, so building healthy relationships with the members on your team goes a long way.

Promotion discussions

I do not feel as though I have always known where I stand, and I find this to be a big issue at PwC. Despite getting formal feedback, as CRT (career round table) concluded I ended up being significantly lower than what I expected. I received no formal warning, improvement plan, and had no conversation. I had reached out to partners and directors, yet the result was not what I was expecting. The feedback process is poor, and I encourage you to be ready for a result you might not see coming.
July 5, 2020

Accessibility

PwC offers counseling service to employees. This includes 5 free sessions per year.
July 5, 2020

Relationships with manager(s)

Managers have supported me by being open to my interests. There is a full chain of people you can connect with on a regular basis to discuss performance and issues. The managers could have supported me more by relaying honest and specific feedback. Solicit feedback early and often. Speak to partners but be aware that feedback is not always the whole story.
July 5, 2020

End-to-end

Looking back, I'm not sure if I would come to PwC. I think PwC has a name behind it that is recognized and trusted, which is what initially drew me to the company. I saw myself working here for 4 years, and working up to being a manager. If I was someone looking at PwC, I would be interested because of the name on the resume which can take you places. However, I would not stay for a career, particularly if you are a minority. In my group of about 150, I am 1 of 3 African Americans that I am aware of.
July 5, 2020

Company culture

The company has a relatively serious culture. However, it is a good place to learn a lot very quickly and for expanding you network. I feel that I can be myself because generally people are quite friendly. The expectations are high and the job can be demanding. I am on the road Monday through Thursday, meaning I spend a lot of time with my teammates. Teams either become best friends or have a lot of problems due to the amount of time spent together. The bright side is that engagements usually last 3-6 months, so even if you're on a bad team you can switch after this time frame.
